Effective from 15 January 2026, the Building and Construction (Small Standalone Dwellings) Amendment Act 2025 allows homeowners to construct standalone dwellings (granny flats) up to 70m² without a building consent. While this streamlines the process, the build must still comply strictly with the New Zealand Building Code and be managed by Licensed Building Professionals (LBPs).
